Baptist Health – Fort Smith Stresses Hispanic Breast Cancer Risk

Oct 15, 2024 | Latest News

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Baptist Health – Fort Smith is partnering with the Reynolds Cancer Support House to provide free education to Hispanic women in our community.

Studies show that Hispanic women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer at later stages, when it’s more difficult to treat.

According to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, this could be due to a lack of knowledge about recommended screenings, as well as a lack of access to care and language barriers.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month and to help bridge the gap, Baptist Health La Clínica del Pueblo is partnering with the Reynolds Cancer Support House to provide a free educational event to help Hispanic women better understand their risk of breast cancer and the importance of annual screening mammograms.Dr. Wilson Cruz, a Baptist Health family medicine physician, and his staff will provide information in Spanish on the risk factors for breast cancer, genetic testing, mammography and screening options for dense breast tissue such as the Automated Breast Ultrasound System (ABUS) at Baptist Health Breast Center-Fort Smith.

The event is free to community members and will be held Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Reynolds Cancer Support House located at 3324 South M St. in Fort Smith.
