Fort Smith Public Library Pet Food & Supply Drive for Fort Smith Animal Haven

All locations of the Fort Smith Public Library will hold a pet food and supply drive for Fort Smith Animal Havenduring the month of April.  The shelter relies heavily on donations to better the care and treatment of all animals within their shelter. Items on their wish list include; kitty litter, dog and cat treats, wet kitten and puppy food, large dog food, hard cat food, cat and dog toys, Tide pods, bleach, vinyl gloves, paper towels, blankets, towels, paper plates or bowls, plastic spoons and forks, dawn dishwashing liquid, harnesses of all sizes, and hard-cover carriers large and small.  Bring your donations to any Fort Smith Public Library location during the month of April and help out a pet in need!

National Library Week is April 6-12, but we are celebrating all month long in the Youth Services Department at the Main Library!  See if you can find all of the book characters hidden around the Youth Services Department and win a prize!

Now at the Main Library!  A love of reading starts early.  Babies and their caregivers are invited to join the Main Library for this special storytime geared toward children 0 to 24 months old.  There will be rhymes, songs, simple stories, and lots of interactive fun!  The storytime will last around twenty minutes, with time for casual interaction following the program.

Create a cute and decorative paper succulent using our Take & Make Craft Kit! Pick up a kit with all the materials and instructions, and then enjoy assembling it at home. Kits will be available at the Circulation Desk starting April 2 while supplies last.

Is your garden becoming a little overgrown, or do you have too many seeds to plant? Bring plant or seeds to share or swap. Our swap table will be setup at the Main Library near the main desk from April 6 – 12. Feel free to drop off and pick up! In the spirit of sharing, if you take one, please leave one. Please also label your plants/seeds. Plants should be in a container and seeds in an envelope marked with contents. Plants must be pest free and healthy.

Big Read Genealogy Writing Workshop

As a part of the NEA Big Read program, teens and adults are invited to a flash writing workshop. Inspired by Kao Kalia Yang’s The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir, participants will learn how to step into the shoes of their ancestors through narrative writing. Writing supplies will be provided, all you will need is your imagination.

The National Endowment for the Arts Big Read is designed to help our nation broaden understanding of ourselves, our communities, and our world – all through reading the same book.  The U.S. Marshals Museum is a recipient of an NEA Big Read grant for Spring 2025, and the Library is a community partner. The NEA Big Read hopes to build strong community connections by creating conversations with a variety of perspectives. NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.

Drug Take Back Day at the FSPL Main Library

Safely dispose of unused or expired medications at the Main Library on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. as the library joins over 250 sites across Arkansas participating in Arkansas Drug Take Back Day.  ID is not required and no questions will be asked.  Medications will be destroyed in an environmentally safe manner, protecting drinking water, pets, and other people from the negative effects of flushing or pouring medications down the drain or throwing them in the trash.  This event is a partnership between the Fort Smith Public Library and the Sebastian County Opioid Task Force.
