November 2022 Events at the Fort Smith Public Library
In-person library programming is contingent on safe community COVID-19 Levels.  The library uses data from the CDC to determine public health measures in our facilities.

FSPL Holiday Food Drive

All Fort Smith Public Library Locations

Help out local families in need by donating to this year’s Fort Smith Public Library Holiday Food Drive.

One in five people in our area are struggling, one in three rural Arkansas children live in food insecure homes.  Drop off your non-perishable food items at any Fort Smith library location from November 1 –

December 31.  Donations will be accepted all hours that the library is open; all food collected will be given to the Community Clearing House to help the hungry in the Fort Smith area.

Miller Branch Artist of the Month: Tanya Bateman

Miller Branch Library, 8701 South 28th Street, Fort Smith (479-646-3945)

The artwork of Tanya Bateman will be featured at the Miller Branch Library during the month of November. Traveling inspired Tanya to begin painting almost ten years ago.  Her oil and acrylic paintings offer a wide variety of subjects, but she prefers to paint scenery and landscapes.  She has recently discovered a new medium: making art out of shells and glass shards.  Be sure to stop by and enjoy her work during the month of November; artwork is available for viewing all hours that the library is open.

Season Ticket: Featured Spice Blend – Gochugaru

Expand your taste buds with our Season Ticket kit. This month’s featured spice blend is Gochugaru. The kit, which will be available at the beginning of the month at the library, will feature a sample of the featured spice, a fact sheet, and a recipe using the featured spice. Autumn Origami

Get ready for Thanksgiving and try your hand at some autumn themed origami crafts.  Use your smartphone to scan the provided QR codes linked to YouTube videos explaining how to complete the different crafts.  Both simple and intermediate level crafts will be available.  All materials will be provided.  Participants will need a smart phone or tablet with headphones for this project.  For Library hours and location, visit www.fortsmithlibrary.org.

Bad Art

Come join us for a freestyle craft event at the Miller Branch and make some BAD art!  Everyone in attendance will have access to a variety of craft and art materials, so you can make something truly one of a kind.  At the end of the program, we will put the masterpieces out for a Bad Art Exhibit that will be on display through the end of the month of November.

Let There Be Light – Nature Photography by Steven Hunter

Fort Smith Public Library, 3201 Rogers Avenue, Fort Smith (479-783-0229)

The nature photography of Steven Hunter will be on display in the community room of the Main Library through the end of December.  Images will encompass western Arkansas and all of Oklahoma, with an emphasis on the Wichita Mountains.   Steven will also present a slide program and book signing on Sunday, November 20, at 2:30 PM at the Main Library, where you will be treated to cloud-filled landscapes; beautiful and rare wildflowers; butterflies; evocative wildlife portraits; and colorful, amazing birds. Steven will share the stories behind many of the pictures during the program and will field questions afterwards.   Nature photography started out as a means for Steven to cope with severe depression but eventually took on a life of its own. Steven is the photographer and author of three books on nature photography and has a fourth one in the works. It is his hope that you will find inspiration and joy in his images. Artwork is available for viewing whenever meetings are not being held in the community room.

Not only is storytime fun, it’s an excellent way for adults and caregivers to interact with their children while helping them build early literacy skills and laying the foundation for preparing children to learn to read.

This month’s feature will be It Happened One Night (1939) which stars Claudette Colbert and Don Ameche and directed by Mitchell Leisen. This comedy is about an unemployed American showgirl who is stranded in Paris and hired by millionaire to break up his wife’s affair with another man. This film is not rated and runs 94 minutes.

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer JR Preview Show

CSA’s Stars on Stage is proud to be the first organization to present Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer JR in this part of Arkansas, and you’re invited to the preview show at the Main Library!  Because of his shiny nose, Rudolph doesn’t feel like he belongs in Christmastown and sets off to find a place that accepts him. Along his journey, he encounters fellow misfits, only to realize that home is where he has belonged the whole time. When a storm threatens to keep Santa’s sleigh from taking flight, it’s up to Rudolph to save Christmas! Wills on Wheels is a free legal clinic hosted by the Center for Arkansas Legal Services. This clinic invites community members to work with an attorney for free help preparing: Beneficiary Deeds, Affidavit of Small Estate, Power of Attorney, Advanced Directives, and Guardianships of Minors. Walk-ins are welcome.

The Perfect Gift:  Library Books for Christmas!

All Library locations

Honor someone special while sharing your love of reading by donating to the Fort Smith Public Library’s The Perfect Gift: Library Books for Christmas fundraiser.  From November 28th through December 31st, individuals may visit any Fort Smith Public Library location to choose a book to add to the library’s collection in honor or memory of someone special.  Children’s books are a $10 donation; adult books are a $25 donation.  Proceeds from the Perfect Gift fundraiser will go to the library’s materials fund to be used for the purchase of new library materials.  For more information, call the library at 479-783-0229 or visit the library’s web site at www.fortsmithlibrary.org.
