Dewey’s CafĂ© Artist – Scott Smith

The photography of Scott Smith will be on display at Dewey’s CafĂ© though the month of June.  The exhibit will feature concert shots, and will be available for viewing all hours the cafĂ© is open.

All Together Now: Summer Reading Program – (for kids)

Hey kids!  Are you ready to read (and listen!) for fun, points, and prizes?    Sign up in the library or online, and read, read, READ!  Independent readers, you will earn one point for every minute you spend reading, and you’ll earn prizes along the way!  EARN 1000 points, and you will earn your certificate, final prizes, and you will be able to pick a library book to be dedicated to YOU!  You will also be entered to win an end-of-summer GRAND PRIZE! The children’s Summer Reading Program encourages reading for pleasure and is designed to minimize summer learning loss.  The Summer Reading Program keeps kids actively engaged in reading while encouraging family involvement at the same time.  Preschool children too young to read independently can also participate. Because the best way to raise a reader is to read to a child, they will receive points for the time spent listening to books. The Arkansas State Library is providing READSquared with funding made possible by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.  Additional summer reading funding is provided by the Friends of the Library.

Partner artist Marie de Lourdes Valverde will be at the Main Library from 2 to 5 PM and will be introducing participants to a paper doll portrait activity & community mural activation inspired by Diego Rivera’s America. Lourdes will meet with participants and share her own experiences with community, belonging, and resilience. The CB to You Mobile Art Lab is a traveling pop-up art experience energizing the power of community through art. You won’t want to miss it!

The Fort Smith Public Library is excited to welcome New York Times bestselling author, Ayana Gray, as she kicks off her If All Arkansas Read the Same Book tour.  Ms. Gray is the author of the Beasts of Prey series. Beasts of Prey, her debut novel, was published in the fall of 2021. Beasts of Ruin is the second novel in the series of three and was published last summer. In the series, fate binds a beast keeper and a warrior-in-training together as they unravel mysteries that threaten their home. The third novel in the series is forthcoming. Ayana Gray is a bestselling young adult fantasy author and a lover of all thing’s monsters, mythos, and magic. Originally from Atlanta, she now lives in Little Rock, where she reads avidly, follows Formula One racing, and worries over the varying moods of her adopted baby black rhino, Apollo, and her mini goldendoodle, Dolly. Local author David Steen will appear at the Fort Smith Public Library to promote and sign copies his latest book Almost Home: Setting Our Sights Toward Heaven. Join one family’s journey to find hope for the future as they pursue their heavenly home. Born worlds apart, a boy and girl chased the American Dream until the lives they carefully built fell apart in the wake of divorce. Only through the power of God’s love were they able to heal and discover a life they couldn’t have possibly imagined. David resides on a small farm in Hartford, Arkansas, where he enjoys long walks to the creek with his lovely wife and short walks through the field with his sheep. Other passions include writing, music, reading, cooking for their large family, and sipping on a cup of dark roast coffee as often as possible.  Copies of the Almost Home will be available for sale and signing at this open-house style event.

Socrates Cafe

Come and participate in a monthly friendly philosophical discussion with other adults who are interested in learning through questioning and reflecting with others in open-minded dialogue, using the Socratic method.

During our Socrates Cafe gatherings, attendees propose questions for the topic of the night, which are then put to a democratic vote to determine the subject of the evening’s discussion. Once the topic is chosen, the conversation takes off! If necessary, a skilled moderator is appointed to gently guide the conversation. Our meetings take place every second Tuesday of the month from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm in the Carnegie Room.

Not only is storytime fun, it’s an excellent way for adults and caregivers to interact with their children while helping them build early literacy skills and laying the foundation for preparing children to learn to read.
