NATIONAL BOOK AWARD NOMINEE KATE MILFORD TO VISIT STUDENTS IN FORT SMITH!
Milford to Support Students and Independent Bookstores in Two-Day Visit.
Edgar Award-winning author Kate Milford will travel to Fort Smith to visit with students at elementary and middle schools, both public and private. Milford will begin school visits Wednesday morning at Immaculate Conception School followed by Christ the King before moving to Fairview Elementary, Tilles Elementary, and Kimmons Middle School. On Thursday morning, First Lutheran, Fort Smith Montessori School, and homeschool groups are invited to join Milford and the Bookish team in the Collection Room at the Bakery District. “It is such a joy to bring an author like Kate into our community,” says Sara Putman, owner of Bookish. “Experiences like these can make a lasting impression on students, spark creativity, and allow young people to connect what they are doing in their classrooms with the wider world.” With the help of Kelly Schluterman, Bookish launched a middle-grade book club over the summer. Milford’s novel, Greenglass House, was longlisted for the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature in 2014. “We were trying to expose kids to different genres, and thought this book had enough magic and fantasy to keep them interested without having dragons,” says Schluterman. “It was a great choice!” Milford is promoting her newest book in the Greenglass universe, The Raconteur’s Commonplace Book which was released in paperback this past August. Talk-ish, the middle-grade book and writing community at Bookish, often connects young readers to the authors they read. “We’ve met with authors virtually two out of our four meetings, which is always a treat for the author and our group,” remarks Schluterman. Talk-ish meets the second Wednesday of every month at 4:30p.m. and all middle grade students, ages 8-12 are welcome. If you’re not on the school tour list, don’t worry. Bookish will hold a meet & greet/book signing event with Milford on Wednesday, October 18 from 5:30-7pm. Light refreshments will be provided as well as an opportunity to purchase books and have them signed by Milford.
